The Cedar Rapids Municipal Band season gets underway this Wednesday with a concert at NewBo City Market. The market will be open. The band will perform this week’s program again on Sunday, June 9 at Bever Park.
Both concerts begin at 7:30 pm; Sunday’s performance will be preceded by a 6:30 performance by the Cedar Rapids Metro Youth Wind Ensemble.
This week’s program features KCCK’s Dennis Green narrating Robert W. Smith’s “The Greatest Generation.” During the piece, all veterans of the US military will be asked to stand so they may be recognized. It promises to be a moving–and well deserved–tribute.
As is tradition for the first concert of the season, the band will perform Karl King’s “Iowa Band Law.” CR Mayor Brad Hart will take to the podium to conduct the spirited march.
Also on the program: music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, The Beatles, Samuel Hazo, Alton Adams (the first black bandmaster in the US Navy), and John Philip Sousa. Plus, you simply cannot miss “Pink Panther Meets R2D2.”
Recent Washington High School grad Natalie Novak will perform the National Anthem and the Cedar Rapids Song of Dedication.
The Wednesday evening performance will air live on KMRY radio.
